What kind of shape should I be in for a day hike?

This will completely depend on your individual fitness level. Everyone is different, so it’s important to know where you stand, especially at over 7,000 feet above sea level! If you’re in doubt, it’s best to go with an easy hike to be safe. If you’re in good shape but coming from sea level, or close to it, a moderate hike would be safe to compensate for the elevation. Strenuous hikes are only recommended for those who are certain of their physical abilities.

What kind of clothing should I wear?

Yellowstone is a place of extremes. Days can be warm and pleasant, or cold and rainy. The latter is especially true outside of peak summer season (July and August). Bring comfortable, lightweight, and breathable clothes as well as an extra layer for warmth. A waterproof layer, such as a rain jacket or a poncho, is also highly recommended since storms can materialize in minutes. If you plan on wearing short sleeves, you’ll also want to bring sunscreen.

What about water?

For most hikes, it’s recommended you bring 2-3 liters to carry. This can be in 1 liter bottles, such as a Nalgene, or in a bladder system in a backpack. We can provide the water, but you’re responsible for drinking it and carrying your supply. Staying hydrated in Yellowstone National Park is absolutely vital. Dehydration can hit quickly and suddenly, and the best way to avoid it is to drink regularly, especially if you’re feeling tired. On longer hikes, we may filter water from a creek or stream to resupply.

What else should I bring?

Bring anything else you typically bring on a hike. This can include a camera (or phone), any extra snacks you’d prefer, and of course, a comfortable backpack to carry it all in.
